Yesterday on my way to the mall an old couple entered the bus. I see old people all the time but there was something different about these two. The old man was holding the lady’s hand and he did not let go off her hand the whole entire ride to their destination. On the other hand the man could not stop looking at his wife and each time he glanced at her, she would smile and squeeze his hand. l am not a relationship expert but l could tell they truly loved each other, every detail about them clearly showed how they felt about each other. While l was still admiring the old couple my phone buzzed and l was distracted, it was a text message from one of my close friends back home in Kenya, she had sent me a picture on Whatsapp of the guy l had a crush on back when l was in grade 8. I could not help but laugh as l remembered the good old times, I just looked at the picture and laughed, he has changed a lot since then, from a tiny, skinny, dark skinned little boy to a grown 6 foot tall guy, more defined jaws and broader shoulders but still the same dark complexion. I did not want to reply her message because I knew she wanted to inquire about my love life which I am not ashamed to say my love life is like an iPhone 6, it does not exist. This is my own thinking, which no one has to agree with but we are all caught up in our own little bubbles and set to attain perfection that we forget to realize there is a lot more out there for us. We look at the picture as a whole instead of focusing on the little details that make the picture a whole. Everything this days is defined for us, and I know most people talk about how we should not let the media detect our lives for us from what we should eat, drink, wear, listen to, dress etc. but all this has been transferred to who we should date, how they should look, the standards they should reach, how they should treat us, blah blah its like there is a guideline for everything. I have done some pretty insane things in the name of “love”. I spent hours mastering different, cars, sports, politics so l could talk my ass off next time I met Mr. T because those were his favourite things to talk about. I worked my ass off to roll a tree on the first date because he had said that was the sexiest thing a girl could do for her man but every “love story” this days end with the same ol shit.
Excuses!
“My last relationship was fucked up, she cheated on me” (Uh, Who hasn’t been cheated on?)
“Uh l had a fucked up childhood” (Who hasn’t?)
“Uh well l’ve been hurt real bad” (Who hasn’t?)
“Oh baby, you know the time is not right, l want to be in a certain place financially, emotionally, spiritually…”
So what????
People have forgotten that once upon a time high school sweethearts who met in third grade have actually ended up married and have built a life, shared a life, set and made goals and loved with their souls just like the old couple in the bus.How come we cannot meet each other in the middle without fears and hangups and live and love and live and love and live and love with no motherfuxking excuses.
